Accommodations

We attempt to offer private housing to locum and resident doctors whenever possible. This could be a house, two-bedroom apartment or a mobile home. Medical students will often be accommodated in the dorm-style Wrinch Residence. Families are welcome, but the accommodations are not child proof, and we would have to crowd-source a crib, etc. and we would need early notice to arrange larger housing if possible.

Accommodations are simple but have the basics, kitchen utensils, bedding, furniture, TV with satellite service and wireless internet. Should you enjoy cooking, you may wish to bring your own knives (sharp ones). If you would like a selection of spices, please ask Dani and Chef Kelly may be able to assist. The modular trailers and houses have laundry facilities, and the apartments have machines located on the basement floor. If you require anything specific during your time here — let us know and we can try to help!

For groceries, there is one grocery store within walking distance from the hospital, known as the Gitanmaax Market which also has a canteen in the Gitanmaax gas bar that has pub style food available at least 5 days a week. There is also another grocery store along Highway 16 in New Hazelton called McDonalds Store, across from the Skeena Bakery. There are usually snacks stocked in the Physician’s Lounge/call room if you need while you’re on call. The cafeteria at the hospital is currently closed for food purchases however open to bring your own. There are a few restaurants in New Hazelton as well (Zelda’s is great). For a more upscale culinary experience, the restaurant in the Kispiox Lodge called Ebb & Flow Bistro is a must visit.

Travel

There are two main ways people can get to Hazelton, either by driving their own personal vehicle or flying into one of the regional airports in Smithers or Terrace. Air Canada flies in and out of both Smithers and Terrace from Vancouver, and Westjet flies in and out of Terrace from Vancouver. There are multiple flights per day to each destination.

If you have flexibility and aren’t on a tight schedule, you can also take the train! Via rail stops in New Hazelton en route between Jasper-Prince George-Prince Rupert. Via Rail in the North is slow travel. If arriving by train isn’t efficient, a side trip to Prince Rupert by train from New Hazelton is a great way to take in the scenery if you have a bit of time on your hands on days off.

Most people prefer to drive (or rent a car for their time here), as it is preferable to have a car with the local geography and lack of public transit options. Communities are located a fair distance apart and having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to do more sightseeing. There is a limited community transit system and one taxi, though people are very friendly and helpful if you need a ride to get groceries, etc. We also have a few bikes that can be borrowed during your time here. Talk to one of our NPs, Kyle Munro to inquire.

We are happy to try to assist you with transportation to and from Wrinch Memorial Hospital if you have not already arranged transportation (ie. rental cars, rides outside of our services). For flights to Terrace, a trip can be booked with Kalum Kabs services. If you are coming through UBC, you will have to pay for this service and be reimbursed by your school. For flights to Smithers, a pick-up can be arranged through one of our contracted drivers, if we know well enough in advance. For assistance with this, please contact Loretta Willan.
